The Fero cooperative, one of Sidama Coffee Farmers Union’s 45 member co-ops, grows some of the world’s best coffee in 3,000 hectares of rich volcanic soil. The co-op employs the Relationship Coffee Model with its members to generate a stable income for growers and their families. Fero’s leaders promote transparency between members and the cooperative, easing problems caused by a volatile commodities market. The co-op brought electricity to Yirgalem, the district’s urban center, for the first time in 2005 and built a primary school that year. The co-op’s excellent agronomic practices and progressive social policies have earned the organization international attention as well as certification from Fairtrade International and USDA Organic.
